Park Safety and Security are primary goals for Island Pacific Adventures Ltd., the current park operator for both BC Parks and the Nanaimo Regional District, at Horne Lake. These parks contain rivers, caves, cliffs, lakeshore and forested environments that feature a wide variety of activities and risks. We have been conducting the guided tour programs and managing park operations for over 20 years and have developed excellent risk management and safety policies that stand as testament to our excellent training and safety record.
Insurance – as required by Provincial and Regional Parks, our company holds a Comprehensive General Liability Policy in the amount of $2 Million, covering all of our park operations including rock climbing, caving, canoeing and other general camp programs.
Certifications and Qualifications of Guides / Instructors – all staff (including office and maintenance) must have a valid First Aid certificate (min. OFA 1 or Emergency Care) and current CPR. In addition, we always have at least one advanced first aid attendant on site (OFA 3 Industrial Attendant or Advanced Wilderness First Aid.) Our guides undertake 2 weeks of in-house training which includes Standard Operating Guidelines, Emergency Procedures and Risk Management of activities. Our Senior Guides have taken Provincial Cave Rescue Courses.
Canoe Instructors - Our canoe instructors must hold a Lakewater Canoe Instructor Certification through Canoe BC (RCABC.) We always have 2 employees on programs where the groups have 7 or more (4 boats) participants – one lead and another sweep boat occupied with a certified canoe instructor. All boats are equipped with bailers, sounding devices and throw bags as required by Coast Guard regulations. All paddlers must wear approved PFDs. All certified instructors have been trained in canoe rescues.
This year marks the start of our twenty-second year operating as guides for BC Parks at Horne Lake Caves and we am proud to say that we have an excellent safety record with no major incidents after guiding over 125,000 clients of all ages and abilities.
